Ideal Budget.

Postby nomad_jenny » August 3rd, 2005

What would your ideal monthly budget be for trotting around the world if you could pick one? Like if you could have X amount of money deposited into your account at the 1st of the month every month.

An estimate that's something you could be comfortable with... have money for spur of the moment stuff... yet not living friviously. It would include all expenses, excursions, and airfare.

I know the country/continent has a big deal to do with it but I think that with one being really inexpensive and another being expensive it eventually evens out for the most part. What you don't spend in a cheap country will be saved for the more expensive ones.

My guess is around 2,000 USD per month from the research I've seen on other blogs and posts...

Whatcha think? Too low? Too high?

well jenny I'm budgeting around $2,500 per month but intend doing a bit of partying on the way around and maybe a nice hotel now and again.
I'm sure you can do it on half that if you go to the right countries and stick to a budget. I'm also sure you could blow any budget if you're not smart.

Including airfare, anything from $1,500 to $2,000 US would be a good amount if you were splitting your time relatively evenly between cheap countries and expensive ones. If you plan on spending six months in Japan or Scandanavia, all bets are off!

All countries averaged together, I'm figuring about $100 a day, but this includes plane tickets between a few countries as well (Cairo to Delhi, Calcutta to jakarta, and about 3 more). Perhaps a more reasonable estimate would be $50 minumum, all expenditures considered, or $75 for a little more comfort. *shrug* Depends on how you'll end up traveling!

I'm planning very bare-bones, but more than likely I'll be sick of roughing it after a few weeks/months, and not mind shelling out for first-class train tickets and single rooms anymore.

I am 4 months into my RTW and currently living on around 50 US dollars a day. This includes plently of drinks, restaurants and some nicer places to stay from time to time.
It also includes some supermarket shopping, crashing with friends =about 3 weeks outta the 4 months =and student discounts.
Covered everything...trains, planes and buses, food and housing...

Oh, also, I should say where Ive been...Im from New york so I guess my ideas are somewhat relative.
Spain, 7 weeks =semi exepensive
Morocco, 4 weeks´=cheep!
Scotland, 3 weeks =expensive
England, 3 weeks ´=super expensive, but crashed with a friend
Czech Rep, 1.5 weeks =decent

If you want to get by on less then 2000 per month you totally can....just like you could spend that much or more. Smart choices on the road will keep you on budget...

I did a trip through Europe a year and a half ago with a 100 a day budget and always ate out, stayed in nice places, bought tons of souveniers...

Sorry for typos, Ive yet to get down with the Czech keyboard...
