A place for geezers, grey hairs, and oldies to discuss independent travel. Reminisce about travel in the days before Lonely Planet and discuss issues applicable to the mature traveller.

If you were 27...would you do it?

Don't listen to advice from people who don't share your core values. If I were in your shoes, without debt, I'd go for it. I didn't lock myself into serious debt (educational investment) until I was nearly 30, when I started law school after spending most of my 20s abroad.

No one reaches age 60 and says to themself that they really regret opting for experience over possessions.

Go for it wildcat you will have the time of your life Africa is fantastic, especially the rural villages. Forget about running water and electricity they are overated comodities. There is a book called "whiteman" by an ex peace corp volunteer I can't remember the author try to find it and read it. Beware the rat race it is not all it's cracked up to be. I left for Africa when I was 27 it was the best decision of my life still here 13 years later. Slower pace of life, no keeping up with the neighbours, fantastic weather beautiful people. Jason.
