Hello all,
Let me start off by saing that I can't wait to get the F out of my cubicle and start my RTW journey. Now that I got it out of my system..
I'm hoping to leave sometime next year with around $30k USD which will have to include EVERYTHING (flights, visas etc). I want to travel and see as much as I can, this is going to be a once in a lifetime trip. I was thinking about...
-3 months - S. America (Peru, Argentina, Chile, Brazil) / $5k for 3 months, ~$50/day
-3 months - South Africa / $5k for 3 months, ~$50/day
-3 months - Europe (Spain, France, Netherlands, Italy) / $8-9k for 3 months, ~$90/day
-3 months - S. East Asia (Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia) / $4k for 3 months, ~$40/day
As you can see, this is a VERY ROUGH itinerary with just the general areas I want to see. I will sleep in the cheapest accomodation possible and I will travel overland if it will save me money.
I am VERY low budget, VERY low maintenance.
Does this trip of mine seem feasible to you guys with just $30k USD? Is doing four continents with possibly four countries each rushing it and doing too much in one year? Should I stick to three continents? I was thinking of setting aside $5k for flights/visas/vaccinations/travel insurance/europe rail pass, and have $25k for everything else.
Thanks for your help guys. I'm really, really determined to do this. I'm saving all of my money right now and can't wait to go. I just have no clue if I'm trying to do too much.

Is my RTW itinerary too much for one year?

Sitting in my cubicle ... lost ... saving for "the big day" ... 2010 ... oh yes, it will happen ...

There's no "perfect" amount of time or countries to hit. I think what you have sounds good. I think your Europe choices are interesting. Have you already been to Germany and Belgium? You kind of have to pass through one to get to the Netherlands. In SE Asia consider Vietnam. Make sure you look up all Visa rules for getting in and how long you can stay.

At a quick glance I think your itinerary overall and budget are fine. One thing I would question is 3 months in South Africa? That's cool if you have a real desire and love for this country and really want to spend a good percentage of your time there but if I was going to Africa for 3 months I would throw in at least one more country to visit. Just my 2 cents.

Your plan seems more or less reasonable. I would watch out for being too structured though. If you plan out your trip too stringently you're going to become a victim of your own planning
