Jakarta to Bali

Postby chili » March 7th, 2006

Hi insiders or experienced ones,
does anyone has a good idea of how to get from Jakarta to Bali - but not by plane? Is there a train, bus ? Has anyone of you done a travel like that. Are there any security things to watch out for.
Would appreciate it very much for sharing your experience with me,
thanx

You can catch a ferry from Bali to Java as these islands are right next to each other. The ferries run 24 / 7. You can also catch ferries from Bali going to other places on Java - Pelni is the main shipping line for the whole of Indonesia but their website often won't give you the info!

To get around on Java depends where you are going - there are buses and trains .
To help you with finding some of the main trains, the main stations in Jakarta are Jakarta Kota, often written as 'Jakaratakota', closer to the old colonial city centre, and Jakarta Gambir, often just written as 'Gambir', closer to the centre of the modern city.
There are two main stations in Surabaya, Surabaya Gubeng and Surabaya Pasarturi. Gubeng is more central, Pasarturi is slightly to the north.

I have done that route by plane and local bus. Don't take the local bus, if you are taking a bus get the air-con luxury type. The train would be better in my opinion, as stated it goes Jakarta - Semarang - Surabaya. Then take a bus -boat- bus to Bali.

Keep your wallet close to you on these long trip with locals.

Hi, you qustion was hot to get bali by land , and my suggestion, get a taxi to terminal rambutan, or lebak bulus, and ask where lorena's counter, they have very good, and comfortable buses, if you get the super executive class, then nothing to complain, you can go to sleep in bus during yr journey, facility, toilet inside, blanket, and they include you 2 meals during yr jouney. but no matter what kind of buses you travel, watch out for yr valuables !!

I just realised that this post was made in 2006! But nevertheless, perhaps someone has some experience travelling overland to Bali? Does any have any idea how much the 'super executive class' or any other class of coach/bus would cost to get there? I have had a look at getting the train, this looks like an interesting choice but I was wondering what the trains were like as it seems that they will take a long time to arrive in Bali!! Any help / advice would be appreciated.
