Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

kerala's a great place to go if the big cities of india don't appeal, it's really chilled and friendly. cochin's a lovely place to go, it almost feels european but in an indian way!! the boat trips can be done in any way you want, take a day trip which is like a tour, they feed you in a "traditional" way and it feels a bit fake, but still pleasant, or you can go for a while and sleep on the boat. i can't really remember how you organise it but we did it on the day we wanted to take the trip.
sorry, my memory is well sketchy!!
have fun, tho!! i loved cochin and kerala in general. if you can make it to karnataka as well, do, gokarna is gorgeous!
sorry it's not much!
have fun

Kate, I don't know if you normally travel solo, but in case you don't, I thought this might help buck up your spirits. One of our writers, Anita Culp, is a female lone traveler, and she wrote an awesome article for us about her experiences and views on going it alone. Just click on the link below:

Hi Kate,
I'll be in Kerala in mid December if you want to hook up! This will be my first time in India, so it should be very exciting! I'll be logging on here frequently, so keep in touch!

I've been to Goa, furthur up the coast at that time of year and its beautiful.....I'm jealous. I think its pretty safe although the local cops sometimes are known to rough up tourists who hang out on the beach at night, it robbery basically.

I think you'll have a great time.

Hi

YWCA is a good option to start off your trip in Kerala. Unfortunately they do not have any on-line reservation.

They can be contacted on:
Y.W.C.A.
M.G. Road, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.

I am really sorry I dont have their phone no, nor is one available by searching on the Internet.

On-line reservation is available for several other hotels, try the web-site - www.hotelskerala.com. I think there is on line reservation for YMCA, (on this very site) perhaps if you could send an email to YMCA and ask for details of YWCA they may oblige.

I generally check in at YWCA, whenever i travel, even if for a day, collect details of safe places to stay in other areas of the same district and move on.

Kerala, I hear is a safe place, though i have not visited it yet.

Have a nice trip.

Hi again

I managed to find one tel no of YWCA. It is of the Mumbai (earlier Bombay unit). They may be able to help.

The no is 91(India code)+22(Mumbai code)+2020445
