We're flying into Auckland on December 5th and starting the hunt for a cheap but reliable vehicle. We'd love to take one off the hands of a fellow traveler who is leaving the country about that same time. We'll be looking to hand off the car again in Feb. 2014. We'll be spending our time on the S. Island so meeting up in Christchurch is also an option.

Ideal rig would be a 4 door hatchback wagon of some sort. She doesn't have to be pretty, but ready and able for adventure. If she just got done taking you for one then that's all the better.

Or if anyone has any suggestions good places to look for cars once on the ground that would also be appreciated!

Cheers and happy travels!

Agree that TradeMe is a great place to look for cars. AutoTrader is another popular one.

NZ focussed backpacker forums are also potential places to look/ask. For example.

I bought 2 cars from backpackerboard.co.nz when travelling in NZ, both were really cheap ($600 for a car, never had any problems and $2800 for a basic campervan.) This was in 2005 though.

When we left NZ we sold both cars at the backpacker car market in Auckland.
