This is a late reply but maybe there are other people who may have the same question.

We have been often to Madikwe. There are 21 commercial lodges and we have stayed at many of them. Madikwe can be likened to Sabi Sand game reserve near kruger park - you cannot do self drive - there are only guided game drives. Most of the lodges are 5-star. The big plus is that Madikwe is malaria-free and is only a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg.

The reserve has the 'super-seven' animals - the big five plus cheetah and wild dog.

This article sums up Madikwe in a nutshell: ... serve.html.

Where Sabi Sand is famous for its leopard sightings Madikwe is best known for its wild dog sightings. We have seen three wild dog kills and photographed the pups at the den.

The leopard sightings are improving in Madikwe as the park management halved the lion population in 2014.
