Money in Tanzania

Postby LP123 » November 2nd, 2009

Good day everyone!

We are planning our first trip to Tanzania (and Africa for that matter), and wondering how to pay for the Kilimanjaro trek and the safari to the local operator(s). We don't want to carry this much cash as we are traveling through Nairobi and for personal safety in general. Are traveler's cheque's accepted in Moshi, Arusha or by the operators themselves? Do we have to cash them in ourselves before paying? Is it feasible to securely wire funds to a local bank? Are there any other alternatives? The ATMs does not appear to be a viable option for the larger expenses due to daily limits on withholdings.

Also, is it customary to pre-pay the full trek/safari? What if the operator doesn't deliver? I would be more comfortable paying a portion upon return - has anyone done this?

Would be greatful for any advice and sharing of your experiences.

Thanks

hi

most operators will be happy to take a deposit with balance to paid upon arrival. If an operator is asking you for full payment well in advance of your trip, i'd be wary of them unless you've done your research and are confident about the operator....

I've never heard of a trip being paid upon completion so that option may not be open to you..

Just use the boards and do your research regarding the operator. Kili is a popular destination so more than likely you'll be able to get some feedback on the operator if you post the name..

Payment with travellers cheques etc should be fine. As long as you've signed and validated the cheque, its the same as dealing with hard currency. They do hv different exchange rates for travellers cheques as opposed to hard cash so make sure that the travel operator is aware that you'll be paying with TC's..

Alternatively there are Forex offices in all the cities that you've mentioned so cashing TC's should not be a problem. Try and avoid using any of the black operators at the Namanga border, it's a good way to get ripped off :-)

otherwise hope you hv a good trip.

cheers
