Mt. Everest & Pokhara Flights & Logistics

Postby gsutiger2 » November 4th, 2009

We are on a time crunch. In one day we would like to:

Catch an early morning Mt. Everest view flight
Tour Khatmandu during the day
Catch an evening flight to Pokhara (meeting up with a group)

Is this possible? Any recommendations on logistics? Should I schedule the flights before leaving or will I be o.k. doing that when I arrive in Kathmandu? I am scheduled to be there the end of November.

Thanks :?

i dont know abt wht u mean by the 'view flight'. I was in nepal in 2005 and went by micro bus to pokhara. was a very very interesting trip took all day, lots of check posts, extremely uncomfortable and unsafe. wld not recommend u do tht unless u r atleast as mad as me. its a minivan with 16 people crammed into it, and they drive like crazy and have a real bad safety record. i did not return by this mode of transport, but i will say tht it makes for a very unique memory. i dont know about flights to pokhara but i did take the buddha air flight in the little plane tht takes u over all the peaks n mt everest. it was incredible. and not very expensive either. they said i cld fly to base camp for 500 USD but i didnt do tht. i found a travel agent through the travel agent @ soaltee hotel. they picked me up and dropped me back and drove me around too. i had to haggle, and i am not white so tht really helped with the pricing too. i dont have the guys infowith me, but if u want i can ask my boyfriend to look around at home for his card. if u have any other questions just ask...also on another note ive been told tht there are lot of cancelled flights etc coz teh maoist issue is resurfacing...u might want to chk tht...

That sounds like any ambitious schedule, but I think it is possible. Some of the Everest sight seeing flights leave early in the morning so you can see the sunrise. I don't think the flights are more than 60 or 90 minutes, so you should be back to Kathmandu at a pretty reasonable hour of the morning. You can book those flights easily from one of the numerous travel agents in Kathmandu. Just shop around a bit or ask at your guest house. Many of the guest houses have their own "travel desk" which will help if you don't have time to get around town before your flight.

You should have plenty of time to see a few of the key sites around Kathmandu in the late morning + early afternoon. The only snag in your plan could be whether you can get a flight to Pokhara in the evening. The flight I took left in the morning, and I seem to recall that most of the flights were before noon. But, that is easy enough to check ahead of time. The flight is only about 45 minutes to an hour, so if you are able to leave late afternoon from Kathmandu, you'll be in Pokhara before dinner.

I think you'll need a little bit of luck to make that all happen in one day. First, I don't think you will be able to book your Everest flight on the day, you'll most likely need to be there a day or two in advance or book it before you get to Nepal. Secondly, I seem to remember the Everest flights get delayed and possibly even cancelled due to weather. I think we sat around most of the morning waiting before the visibility was good enough for us to see anything. When you throw that in plus heading back and forth to the airport twice in one day, I think your sightseeing in Kathmandu could be very limited.
