Myanmar

Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

Myanmar

Postby JonCamdenTown » November 21st, 2008

Hi,

I asked this question on here a few months ago but the situation may have changed since then. Is is safe to travel to Burma/Myanmar at the moment? I'm in Thailand and thinking of heading over next week.

Is there a flight route from Bangkok/Chiang Mai to Mandalay? And which airlines run it?

Any other Burma related advice or recommendations would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

Jon.

I was in Burma about 18 months ago and my only complaint was that I didnt have enough time!

We were in the sort of "big 4" cities...We flew around b/c we were on a limited time rather than limited budget trip...That being said, it was still really affordable, and we stayed in great places for really cheap!

We were in Yangon, Bagan, Inle Lake and Mandalay. We didnt stay very long in Yangon, but I would have loved more time in both Bagan, where there are literally THOUSANDS of temple ruins like you've NEVER seen before! And more time in Inle Lake, maybe to do a few day hike through the mountains...We only had time for a one-day hike.

But all in all, I LOVER BURMA! Great people, great food, loads of English! GO! It's a great country!
this is your life; are you who you want to be? go where you want to go...small trips for now...but look out...www.wherescass.blogspot.com

I think the above post says it all. Myanmar is an amazing country. I'm an Englishman living here in Yangon. The lack of tourism here is a big problem for the industry & the people working in it, you'll be recieved here with huge smiles & open arms by all that you meet, there really is no other place like it in SE Asia.
As with info to your Q on flights, the only route in from Bangkok is to Yangon, from there you can either fly to Mandalay or get a bus or train. If you need any info on these you're more than welcome to contact me.
Prices are still very cheap so your dollars should go along way, shame about the exchange rate though from sterling to dollars..
