Hi,

I will be going to Thailand and wanted to tack on going to Myanmar/Burma with the trip. I only will get the 30 day visa when I get to Thailand and know I wanted to spend at least 2 weeks in Thailand and 2 weeks in Burma. I am planning to get the visa for Myanmar while in Bangkok and only book flights then, but ideally i would go back to Thailand to fly home. When I return to Thailand from Myanmar will I get a new visa or do I need to get a visa extension before I ever leave?

Thanks!

A US passport holder will get a new 30 day Thai visa when you fly back from Myanmar.

You can also get the Myanmar visa on arrival. Quite simple, just make sure you have crisp USD bills. I was in Myanmar about 3 months ago, visa was $10.

You don't have to fly either, you can cross into Myanmar via land depending on your route through Thailand. Re-entry into Thailand overland gives you a 15 day visa waiver.

Thanks! I even called the Thai embassy today and they gave me the most complicated answer that I had no idea what my question was by the end. From what I was reading it seems like you cant get everywhere from the borders, so I will probably just fly as I am more time constrained on this trip.

Jason, what are you on about? Visa on arrival is only available to a couple nationalities under difficult conditions costing $40 for 28 days. Furthermore, although you can cross the border from Thailand to village on the border, foreigners are NOT allowed to travel overland from the Thai/Myanmar border inland.

As for the Thai visa, perhaps it was confusing because it's not a visa. It's a 30 day visa exemption stamp. Whatever it's called, you will be given another 30 days, free of charge, we you fly back to Thailand from Myanmar.

The only way I ever heard it was possible to get a Myanmar VOA was to fly in by Myanmar's own airline from Siem Reap. That could have been just a flight of fancy like JasonT's post as I never talked to anyone who actually did it.

This is not a big issue.
In Bangkok, you can get Myanmar visa easily within 2 or 3 days. Then from here when you travel back to Thailand, you can get visa directly at the airport.

For an extra few $ you can get a visa at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok the same day. 8-)

* note that contrary to the info in the link flight info + accommodation are not required also a travel agency WILL NOT SPEED THINGS UP BUT IS AN ABSOLUTE WASTE OF MONEY!
