Names for countries in other languages...

Dust off a forgotten foreign tongue, debate the best ways to learn another language, pick up some slang in the local lingo, discuss regional dialects... It's all about being multi-lingual, baby.

In Malay, The Netherlands is "Belanda" - interestingly, turkey (the bird) translates to "ayam Belanda", or "Dutch chicken".

Japan = "Jepun"
China = still spelt China but pronounced "Cina" (the nationality is "Cina")
France = "Perancis"
Germany = "Jerman"
USA = "America Syarikat", literally "Corporate America"
English (nationality and language) = "Inggeris"
The Philippines = "Filipina"
Cambodia = "Kemboja"
Portugal = "Portugis"

There's probably more that I'm forgetting.

In Tagalog...Japan is referred to as Nipongo...or is that just the language? If so, the country is Nippon. Christina-from Brookland, do you know?

Wow, that's cool. Is it pronounced the same? (Or same like?) I guess I can sorta see it...

Tsiri"h"...I think much like "zuri", so maybe one of the best translations or whatever you'd call it. Smile
