hello--
I am a single mom, not well-travelled but would like to begin with my 10 yo daughter. I'm considering a warm-weather sojourn on/around spring break--Mexico, Central America--but would love a destination with history, ie, pyramids, ancient ruins, etc, as well as beach life. Not interested in touristy places and really need to travel on the cheap. Any suggestions?

Hi Patty McLucas,
Welcome!
Not to poop on the idea....but, from the USA, "spring break" and "Mexican beaches" sorta means big money for airfare and accomodations.
And you want history and ruins and on a budget. That's tough.
If you can kill the beach idea.....(10-year-olds love hotel pools I hear!)... then you might be a lot, LOT, better off.
A good start would be to find out when your daughter's spring break actually falls, and see how it coincides with Semana Santa AND Semana Pasquas (two-week holidy period here in Mexico).
Just depends on your budget for airfare and accomodations.

Maybe the Tulum area would suit you, but I hear the Pacific side is a bit rough for swimming(I know it is)
If you do Gulf of Mexico/carribean, well, its resort city at that period of time. Either that or aim at my favorite place where spring break has no meaning,,, Lago Atitlan, Guatemala
Maybe you can find a package vacation price for just shy or after Spring Break. Ixtapa or other areas.
Also, why beach? Why not Oaxaca area, moving to the Pyramids?
Just be careful your times don't dovetail on Semana santa, or you'll be competing with Mexicans for scarce and possibly expensive rooms.
