*Watching glaciers break off and crash into the water in Alaska
*Hike the Skyline trail on Mt Ranier in Washington state and watch people summit the mountain (not quite as memorable as if I would have actually summited I guess)
*Seeing the Mayan city of Xel Ha in the Yucutan and seeing the Sun and Moon Pyramids outside of Mexico City
*Camping in about 15F weather (didn't expect it to get that cold) in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park with a 20F bag.
For details of my 2007-2008 RTW trip go to Barry Backpacks Around the World.

in general, i'd say that a not-to-be-missed travel experience would be spending an extended period of time in the home of locals, eating their food, watching thier tv shows, looking at photos from their own rtw in 1984, that sort of thing.

specifically, i would name these moments:

  • swimming in waterfalls in costa rica
  • collapsing and crying hysterically at the cathedral in santiago after walking the camino
  • snorkeling in Tahiti's lagoons
  • learning about british colonial rule in cyprus while chilin' in the trodos mountains
