Ah well I've lived in both Auckland and just outside SF so that's where the comparison came from- the hills are just about as steep and yep architecture's about the same. Plus mama-to-many lives outside Auckland I think, so seemed a much more apt comparison to make.
Ahh, that makes sense! Didn't mean to question your authority on the subject, it was a comparison I hadn't heard before.

IMO no NZ city is anything to write home about, Auckland least of all, but that's just cause they're mostly small, characterless, generally ugly places. But someone's got to live here;-)
Good luck with the 10 acre block! Aw, I quite loved Wellington, I could've moved there. The old volcanoes were pretty cool in Auckland; my user pic is from Mt Eden where I was leaping around testing the volcano's dormancy
I sigh with a heavy heart when I remember my time spent in NZ, because it was only two weeks. Enough to fall in love, but not enough to do really get to know the place!
Let me know if you come through Nashville or New Orleans whenever your family travels to the USA; I'll write my detailed recommendations for you guys
