I'm looking for recommendations for a packable daypack.
My requirements aren't much:
-shoulder bag or sling bag
-holds around 1000cubic inches
-weighs close to 1lb
-packs down nicely in my main pack
Thanks!

There are lots of those.
I have used a variety of them, and abused a variety of them. I used a 15 dollar flea market bag I liked a lot, but fell apart. Then I bought an Alice Pack without the metal frame. It seems a lot tougher, but it has its faults. One of them is that it says "I am American" very loudly. The thing is, you want something either very durable or very cheap. It still needs to have good shoulder pads and good connections from strap to body, preferably sewn into a strap that crosses the back. I know. I have abused day-packs for most of my life.
Waterproof is nice. Zippers tend to break over time, but they are nice to have until they do break.
Try Sportsmansguide.com, or Rei.com the first is cheaper, the second has a better selection of quality good. The first has some damned good non-american military daypacks for cheap.

Rick Steves Civita Shoulder Bag is cheap, packs down to miniscule size, and is very light. http://travelstore.ricksteves.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=product&theParentId=8&id=273
Crumpler bags make very rugged messenger-style bags, they're much lighter than Timbuk2 messenger bags but I'm not sure if they would pack down as nicely.

if you dont have a main pack yet, check out Eagle Creek's Transcontinental Journey 04. I dont know if they have an 05 out, but im sure there are still some 04's around. I would recommend this pack to anyone looking around for a pack. Its a suitcase style as opposed to rucksack style.
It has a zip-off day pack that functions just as a regular size backpack when unzipped. when on your pack, it sits just on the front.
great pack overall, i never had a problem with mine.

thanks - already have a main pack. I didn't like the zipoff day pack styled packs, felt too "back heavy" on me.

Oh, go ahead. Twist the knife why don't you?

I have been looking around myself... this has been my strategy. I only need to carry, water, a sketchbook and a small camera along with misc. small items. I think I am going to get a hydration pack (ie: Camelbak) they are small and light and have great ergonomics. A bit expensive but worth their weight in gold. Check out these.

Anyone checking out a daypack should look at the Golite stuff. I have the
Go Lite Jam which works for mountaineering, or just a regular day pack around town. It's not nearly as big as you would think unless you have it stuffed full. Also is frameless and less than 2 pounds. It folds up nicely to fit into a suitcase or larger backpack.
Additionally Army surplus stores usually have cheaper stuff that works well.
