Fotobug. Not sure if you are for or against this thing.
Me, I can, without thinking about it, right NOW open a pac safe thing. I guess the casual thief couldn't get through the little cables. So it is good enough for that. It's a thing to carry, and if you feel safer, I suggest you get one and use it. Feeling safer is always good.
Pacsafe?

I'm a firm believer that the more you worry about something the more likely it is going to happen:
If you worry about getting a tick, you are going to get a big one right on your butt.
If you worry about getting malaria, 2 months from now you'll get it.
If you worry about running aground water-skiing, better bust out the first aid kit.
I speak from experience.
Forget the Pacsafe. Don't take anything that you are not prepared to lose. If you aren't prepared to lose it make sure that your insurance will cover it.
The only thing I've had stolen was a pair of socks (honestly, who steals socks?). So, I guess my hakuna matata security system seems to be working.

Not taking expensive crap wasn't an option for me, so we brought a pacsafe. I think it's hilarious that such a personal decision is so divisive on these forums. People who don't like them poke fun at the people who do, which amuses me.
Anyways, I think it's great. Very glad we have them. I've heard plenty of first-hand accounts of when things were stolen that weren't wrapped up, leaving the pacsafed items behind.
Worth the little bit of effort to me.

This little guys is pretty sweet. I use it every day as standard travel procedure... Ipod, passport, etc all go in there. Its not 100% secure (I thought of a small hack into it but am not going to broadcast that - PM) but I think it will deter most casual guesthouse thieves.
Does anybody else use the secure portable safe?

Im off to fiji, oz and se asia for 9mths and got given a pacsafe for xmas and am looking forward to the security benefits it offers, I will rest easy on a train through thailand, on planes and in hostels, as im taking my laptop i think of it as a deterrent more than anything...any traveller will be looked at as a target and i dont think pacsafes yell rob me any more than your average backpacker.
My backpack is also only 75 litres and i have a 120 pacsafe so i can strap stuff to the outside and use it to contain everything together.

I was really super excited about having a pacsafe with me, but now, after 5-ish weeks in central america, brian and I haven't used it once!
I keep thinking, "oh that one time when I really need it, I'll be kicking myself for not having it..." its risky. but it takes up room in my pack i'd rather have free. bleh

Personally, if you feel better using a pacsafe then use one.
Still I agree with whoever said (back on page one) "if they want my dirty laundry..." well go for it. The expensive or important 'stuff' is never in my main pack or left in my room, other than a hotel safe.
I've never had my backpack slashed (touch wood) but I have had two things stolen.
One was my toiletry bag from the bathroom while I was in the shower. You know if someone really needed toiletries that badly they could have asked.
The other was my hat and sunglasses that I took off and put on the table then turned and ordered my food. When I turned back my hat and sunglasses were gone.
Both times a crime of opportunity. Neither major.
Do what is right for you. You can always ditch it if you find you do not want or need it.
Have fun

My God I love this film!
Walter Sobchak: And look at it this way Dude, who's got a million fucking dollars in their trunk? Huh?
The Dude: Their trunk?
Walter Sobchak: Who's got a million fucking dollars in their fucking car? And whadda they got? My dirty undies... my fucking whites...
[They walk out of the bowling alley and see the Dude's car gone]
Walter Sobchak: Dude, where is your car?
The Dude: Fuck...
Walter Sobchak: It was parked in a handicapped zone, perhaps they towed it.
The Dude: You fucking know its been stolen.
Donny: Who's got your undies Walter?

Does anyone here have pictures of pacsafe alternatives?... such as how you secure your pack without having to carry that big ass thing around?

Hi Brooke, I haven't taken off just yet on my RTW, but in prior travels (for 6 mos at a time, etc) I've used a cable lock that retracts, similar to the Kryptonite lock available at REI (http://www.rei.com/product/731084). I loop it through all the zippers and then attach it to a pole/bed, etc. or just loop it through and put on the rain cover when putting my pack under a bus.
