Playing DVDs on an IPOD

Postby zamora » October 25th, 2009

Hi,

I have a 120gig IPOD Classic and I want to know how I can play DVDs on it.

I have spent an age googling this and am aware that i need to convert the DVD into a file that is compatible with an IPOD, thus i have downloaded a number of programs in an attempt to do this...

....however, i cannot seem to get this to work as when i playback this converted file the audio and visual quality is very poor, not even watchable

Could somebody please take the time to run me through what i might be doing wrong?
With all due respect, please do not just direct me to a webpage as I have tried and failed this route, i really need someone who has recently done this and are able to explain to me how!

Cheers

This thread doesn't have any tags.

You can still check out the tag index though.

What are tags?

I've done this many times using DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD data, and then Videora to shrink it for the ipod. Both are free downloads and are fairly self explanatory. Videora in particular gives its own step by step instructions.
Video files take up a bit of space on your iPod of course, but not too much. Watching them also drains the battery quicker, but again I've never found it to be too bad.

I use Handbrake, with DVD43 to decrypt the disc, on a PC. I think it also works fine on a Mac.

It allows you to set the video quality, so if you don't mind less resolution, you can store more movies on the iPod. Typically, my movies end up around 500-700 mb. And you can add subtitles if you are watching a foreign movie.

After downloading those two programs, you load a DVD in your drive. The DVD43 program runs in the background, so when you open Handbrake, just select the settings you want. There is a preset for iPods, but experiment with a smaller percentage on the 'Quality' slider under the Video tab. It is very simple.
