Just curious if anyone has ever felt the need to use the pacsfae mesh system to protect your junk? How was it...was it worth the cost?

Let me just add that I would not be buying it to wear all the time over my sack...just if I had to leave it unattended in my room or something like that. Would feel more comfy if I had to leave money belt inside, because I have heard some of the hostel lockers can be a bit shady.

I picked up a Pac-Safe for my current trip. Right, you look like a dope walking around town with it on, but for leaving you bag behind at potentially dodgey hostel, i think it's fantastic. I'm traveling with a bunch of expensive equipment and the Pac-Safe, in concert with my steel locks and Defcon 1 mobile alarms has such a f*ck-off look that I've been very pleased.

Personally, unless you have some really expensive stuff, I would say.. NO, NO, NO! I lugged that damn thing around in my bag for 5 months in Europe and only used it once. And it really is pretty heavy for its size. I think the Pac Safe retractable-cable lock is great- that, combined with zipper locks always did the trick for my bag. And you can usually find lockable-lockers (imagine that) and safes in hostels also.
Anyways, I had a buddy come join me in Egypt for two weeks and I sent my Pac Safe back home with him.

i have to say, i've never heard of anyone getting their bag cut open, which is the only thing a pacsafe prevents against. far more common are mundane things like getting pick-pocketed, having a bag outright stolen, etc. i would invest my money in stuff that prevented more common forms of theft. here's what i usually bring/do:

locks for my backpack zipper. this is pretty much just a deterrant, but so far, a good one.

i always keep the valubale stuff in a moneybelt/pouch

try to keep your bag with you on buses, instead of on top of the bus.

a padlock is great for dodgy guesthouses/hostels/buses
