Thinking of doing a RTW later this year and need some advice on costs so I can figure out how long I could possible go!!

Keep in mind these are only rough figures for budget travel (travelling alone and can't get student discounts) with the occasional splurge but doesn’t include tickets, insurance etc. (I have listed the approx costs in Australian and US dollars).

Canada A$3,500 / US $2,600 per month

Western Europe A $3,500 / US $2,600 per month
(Minimal time in major cities and in shoulder season)

Other Europe A $2,000 / US $1,500 per month
(Eastern countries & Portugal)

S.E.A. A $1,500 / US $1,100 per month

Do these figures seem alright??

You could do with a much smaller budget, so with this one you'll be very comfortable. At least for Europe, I don't know about the rest.

I'm planning on taking $6,000 with me for a few years of travel. Granted I'll be working, and doing the hostel route.
At least in Asia, if you're planning on staying in nice hotels every night and doing all the tourist attractions (guided tours, ect.) and going out to eat at restaurants every night, then your budget is fine. But if not, you'll have a TON of money, more than you know what do with.

SB, your budget may be approximate, but it sure doesn't sound very rough!

I suppose I've over-estimated coz I've never done the whole hostel thing and I'm not quite sure whether I can do it for the long term so I factored in a bit of a buffer for a hotel splurge.

You're in very good shape with these budgets. Could be cheaper:

I'd recommend (not including airfare):

Western Europe/Canada: US$50/day = US$1500/month
Rest of Europe: US$35/day = US$1000/month
SEAsia: US$20/day = US$600/month

Try to stay below this budget every day, and accumulate the difference each day for a treat or splurge. You can save more by spending less time in the more expesnive countries and more in, say, SEAsia. Europe is a good place for camping, too.

just out of interest i was thnking about budgeting about the same for SE Asia as bubbha just outlined but wasn't sure about australia and the south pacific islands. similar to canada/W.Europe for budghet requirements?

You're loaded--don't worry. You could spend half that amount in SE Asia without trying too hard, especially if you don't go out drinking every night or two. You could actually spend your budget in Western Europe, but you won't be uncomfortable at that level. You'll be doing well.
