Im off travelling in 6 weeks, i have my RTW plane ticket and camera sorted and paid for which leaves me 2 grand to my name and a aussie working visa for june.
First stop is asia, in which i wanna live on roughly a grand for the 6 months tavelling from delhi down through bangkok and indionisia etc which im hoping should be safe, am i mad taking so little cash, or do ppl that take 10 grand on them for these rtw trips, just getting carried away, ive never wanted to take lots of cash 1 reason being id never have that kinda money and 2, it would take the fun out of it being an adventure trip. i wanna stay in hostels, and have no plans to be extravagant, and after my six months is up, im of to work in nz, oz, earning cash there to then move on to cape town for a few months. using the other grand along the way.
has anyone had a great time travelling ona small budget, or do most of u take loadsa cash, and still run out, or bring most back. be nice to hear from u about this...

Are you talking British pounds?
If so, 1000 Pounds is about 15000 South African Rands. Loads of travelling can be done and you will find those adventures you mentioned.
Cape Town and the rest of South Africa is beautiful, so I'm sure you will have a good time.
I have'nt made it to my RTW yet so no tips.
Good luck and have fun.

You are definitely cutting it close and will probably end up spending most of your 2,000 pounds by the time you get to Australia. Yes you can live on US $5 a day in some places and the prices will have dropped in Indonesia ( currency will be changing in your favour too ).
If I was doing your trip I'd set a daily budget with an amount that I was not going to touch for Australia. If you spend time in places like Phuket, Ko Samui you will spend faster. If you get off the beaten track, eat where locals eat and use local transport you can do it.
In India they have a dish called dhal bhaat which is unlimited rice, lentils and some sauce. Loading up on this a couple of times a day and avoiding beer is a great way to save money.
Good luck
Nick

i will try and make a daily budget to stick too, i dont eat much and i love rice so eating that everyday for 6 months i can do, just ad a bit of gravy and im happy. as for the drink well that might be the hard part, but im far from an alchie, so a few drinks here and there i could manage.
Im gonna try stick to the grand for asia, and try not to touch any in oz, and work there and spend what i earn on enjoying myself and living costs and an air ticket to salf africa, i probably do fruit picking or data entry work, in oz, infact ill do anything, well not anything, thats getting a bit carried away but most things...so not afriad ofa little hard work...
and the property is cheap in SA so might rent a place for few months in cape town and try to get a work seekers permit cos i heard they need IT ppl. not that im an IT expert but just graduated so might come in handy, and stay there forever, ok i might be dreaming now, but who knows....ive got no committments anywhere, so just gonna see what happens.
thanks for the good luck wishes Michelle, i hope u get to do ur trip sometime soon,
