RTW travel advice on Money?

Postby PeteD » May 20th, 2002

Hi,

My partner and I have planned a RTW trip for September 2002 travelling Africa, Asia, Australasia etc. We plan to be away for 12 months or more.

We've saved up enough money but would like to know what's the best way of getting money,(ie) cash whilst we are out there?. Is it travellers cheques, or credit cards?

Do you get travellers cheques in large quanities cause they are insured?

cheers

I'd say a Visa or MC is a pretty good way to go. Amex is another option. Visa and MC are more widely accepted because of their processing speeds but Amex have the advantage of hundreds of offices worldwide. I think Amex are a big impersonal company that treat their card holders like crap, but the offices are very handy.

TC's are useful if you get ripped off. Swap receipts with your friend just in case. Remember you have to pay a few per check to cash them. That can add up with many low denomination checks. There's also a different rate for cash exchangeand TC's. In some places like France it can be outrageous.
