Howzit, I'm a 21 year old surfer who made a trip to Indo last summer and had the time of my life. While there I spent most of my time on Java, and only two days exploring the beauty of Bali. I'm planning a month long trip this summer to Bali, and I was wondering about transport. If there's waves, i want to be surfing. I want to explore the culture as well, but i think that the trip to the temples and other places of interest will be less frequent than my trips to the beach. Simply put, how do I most effectively get to the surf and back? Are there cheap places to stay out on the Bukit too? Last summer I was spending about 50,000RP a night for accommodation in Kuta, are there places of equal cleanliness (or lack there of) out near Ulu's, Bingin, and Padang Padang? Or are taking taxi's the best bet? How much are taxi's from Poppies and Poppies II to Ulu's?
I'm a student, so I'm going to be on the budge the whole time. (which I don't think will be that hard on Bali.) I just want a general idea of how to get some good waves in that wonderful place.
Any help would be more than appreciated.
Mahalo Nui Loa
p.s. If there are any Balinese people here, you guys remind me of Maui 10 years ago. Different culture, but same Aloha. Thank you so much for sharing your home with me.
How to get from Kuta to the Surf

Best bet for you is to rent a scooter with a board rack for a month. It will cost you around 500,000.
With this you can access the whole island for cheap, surf the Bukit, stay in Kuta and enjoy the nightlife.
Even if you spend most of your time on the Bukit, still get a bike as it will allow you to get around from the western breaks (Ulu, Bingin etc.) over to Nusa Dua, Sri Lanka.
For a relaxing beautiful time, go to East Bali, PAST Candi Dasa.
Accommodation on the Bukit is as follows.
Cheapest is bamboo shack on the beach at Bingin / Balangan etc for maybe 50,000rp. Its a surfer nest, if that's what you want, but close to the waves.
Middle is the cliff top accomodation, locally owned, with cold water / fan. You might find soimewhere for 150,000rp, but some of the nicer places in this category ask for 250,000rp.
Top is the fancier places with pool, AC, nice rooms. You can spend $50 a night and more.
Don't worry you'll have a blast. Also check out Balian and Medewi out west.

Hey Rob, my name is Jake. I've been surfing my whole life, and not a second of my time in the water has been anything short of incredible. It's the greatest life possible, and I envy you for the surprise that awaits you there. I should be flying down around the middle of July, and I would love to teach you. This greatly depends on my woman situation though, as my girlfriend wants to go to (and she has a real job, so whether or not she can get the time off dictates when I can go. you gotta love being a broke college student, the freedom is awesome.)
Thanks Nick, I'll keep scooters in mind. What's the best way to get used to the traffic situation? When I was there it seemed like suicide to be on one of those scooters. But if it's the way to go, I'm game for a little daredevilry.

Ill be there in March, so will get a beach trader to teach me.
Have a good time
Rob
Ps: I thought the roads in Bali were mad as well. The roads & the way they work were my first & ever lasting impression.
