Long Drive Sydney To Perth

Postby j11Travel » November 9th, 2006

I am planning a long drive from Sydney to Perth anytime between Christmas and New Years eve but I hope to celebrate New Years eve in Perth with some friends. I am looking for people who are planning the same and willing to share petrol. I am planning to stop on tourist and other scenic spots along the way. Please let me know if you're interested.

Or I can just fly to Perth and do the long drive going back to Sydney. The important thing is I really really want to do this long drive of a lifetime. Would it be safe to do this alone in case I don't find anyone interested to share the ride... and the cost?

Has anyone done the same thing before? How long are intervals for accomodation? I can bring a tent if there aren't any. Any tips on planning the trip?

Thanks.

...and thanks eppy for the reply...

Have done it a few times J11 but not recently. Here is a http://www.goseeaustralia.com.au/ViewEditorial.asp?EdID=65]web page that you should get something out of.

Once I towed a caravan so I didn't have to worry about accomodation and another time two of just kept on driving. There is motels every few hundred kms. Is a good experience.

Have fun. try again

I'm not up with hiring costs but I would suspect your best bet would be a campervan.

Towing is not a big deal. I had a V8 at the time and fuel consumption went from about 18 mile to the gallon down to about 12. You did mention petrol in your opening post. Plus I was waylaid for a while as the car I had didn't have a cooler for the automatic transmission. It blew a seal near Penong and I had to spend a few fun mechanicing days.

I have no experience with camper vans but here is a hiring site You can only enquire and find out what you get.

If you just want the experience of the drive, you can get some kip in a car and a shower at a roadhouse. Perhaps book in for one night or so.

A caravan more depends on what you want to do other there.

What about something like the Wicked campers? They regularly go around/across/up n down Australia...

Not that I've ever used one, but they're popular...

You might want to check out campervan relocations as a cheaper way of doing it when you're not planning to take too long.
