Home stays in Thailand

Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

Home stays in Thailand

Once again, I appeal to you wonderful people for advice.

My brother's coming to visit me here in Thailand next month and would really like to do a cultural home stay. I've done a few with my program, and my family in Nan said that any time I want to return, I'm welcome to stay with them (though I'm not sure if they were just saying that). So I could contact them and see if it would be possible to visit with them for a few days, but I would much rather go up to the Golden Triangle, as I have yet to see that area.

So can anyone recommend a short (less than a week: we have from May 25th to June 1st, and I'd like to show him around Chiang Mai for at least a few days) tour or home stay program that doesn't exploit the people we'd be staying with? I'd like as much of my money as possible to go to them rather than the tour company. Also, it'd be nice to stay in one place for a few nights instead of jumping around.

Even ideas of which phrases to Google would be helpful. :-)

Thanks!

Don't know if you would be interested in staying in Chiang Mai. I happened to be in a village of Mae Kampong for Flight of the Gibbon with people at my workplace and saw that the village also do a home stay thing. From my view, the village looks very pretty, nestled among greenery forest. What I like most is its natural atmosphere and nice clean weather. I don't know about home stay there in detail, so it might be better for you to Google it with keywords of Mae Kampong or Mae Kompong and flight of the gibbon. Here's a general info I found.
