kitesurf around the world?

Postby susanmg » February 18th, 2009

hey - has anyone ever traveled around to kiteboard? i'm plotting a year-long trip and would love to kiteboard in some of the amazing places, but am worried about two things. First carrying all my kiteboarding gear (unfortunately, its expensive even in cheap places to rent) and second, getting sick of beaches all the time. Gear includes board (131 cm x 40 cm), two kites which fold up to small backpack sized each, one 45 cm bar, and a pump. i figure maybe if i plan to spend some decent time (couple weeks or a month) at locations it won't be that bad and then hopefully i can ditch the gear in a locker for a couple weeks while traveling the interior. is this crazy?

I met a guy in the Dominican Republic last year (at Encuerto) who had been travelling with his kite surf gear and a surfboard for several months, staying in places for a few weeks at a time. The only thing that he had problems with was travelling by public transport due to the size of it all and his concerns about its safety due to its value. If you can handle that then it makes sense to take your own gear since you are planning to do a lot of kite surfing, because as you say, renting is expensive.
