Tent for the tall (need help)

Postby umagrama » September 12th, 2009

Hello backpackers!

I need the help of this community to find a good tent to purchase. I have been doing a lot of camping in the last 2-3 years, I have been relaying on a tent and living in the tent on and off. I always seem to end up going to wall-mart to buy a cheap tent to get me by due to lack of resources. Now I saved a little bit and I would like to purchase something better so I can sleep better at night (and dry).

I am 1.95 meters (about 6 feet and 5 inches) and that is always an issue when searching for a tent. I always end up using a 3 person tent that is large enough, or sleeping diagonally in a dome tent. The last night I bought was a tunnel tent for $30 bucks at wally world and it actually fit me in. Amazing. But sleeping with my girl and having gear in it didnt work so amazingly. It was either my gear or my girl. Let's just say my girl dumped me that night. Just kidding...

Tent preferences:
- lightweight
- 1.95m guy will fit
- free-standing (I like domes, easy and simple)
- rain proof (Here in Hawaii rains A LOT and I always end up carrying a tarp as well)
- price range 100 to $150 USD (just cant afford the really expensive stuff)

I heard there are websites that you can purchase outdoor gear that didn't pass quality assurance for way cheaper prices, any one know of any?

Thanks!

Hi umagrama,

I'm the same size and go very well with my Troja 1 from Northland, it is very light and not so expensive. But its only for One.

I would consider to Check a Hunting Store nearby and Check the Stocks there rather than the Mart, especially if your out a lot.

(MSR looks like a good Advice too :)

Cheers

It looks great, but where do you get it? I coudn't find it out there for sale. I googled for the tent model and brand and actually found one that was 199 euros (I think) and nothing else. Its length would work perfectly... thanks for the info! I'm gonna keep it in mind and my eyes open.

(I would like to find something good for 2-people, it's always more fun when you got someone to take camping.)

Cheers!

I have been comparing the following tents:

- MSR Hubba Hubba: seems to be a great tent, however, I think a tall person would be very cramped there with a second person. It'd get it if I was half foot shorter. Price: $209 to $350

- Sierra Sirius 3: a three person tent, great space for the $94 on sale cost, seems to be great but it is only 84 inches long -- too short. Oh, and it doesnt have a full-fly coverage. Lightweight (4 pounds and a few ounces)

- Sierra Omega 2: this is the one I am considering buying now. 93 inches long, two person, full rain coverage, 4 season convartible, $350 dollar tent for half price. It is just a little heavy (6 pounds and 5 ounces) and that is for the 4 season....

Hej Umagrama,

The Sierra Omega 2 looks good and it looks like a very strong Construction with enough Space for longer rain (Sitting, playing Cards..) It will take you a little longer to build it as it has 3Poles (that makes as well the weight) but if Weight is not an big issue, its sure a solid Choice.

The Sierra Sirius 3 looks as well good but i would tend as well to the Omega 2.

My Troja, i got it at a small Shop called Northland in Austria.. It has been a while ago.. I think it is not anymore sold, sorry..

Please post some Experiences as it is really hard to find good Tents for us tall :)

Good Choices!

I own this tent, and I believe it is the right tent for you, because:

- I am six foot tall, and still have plenty of room to store things at my feet AND above my head. Even someone of your height should be comfy.
- Freestanding
- Set it up with just bug netting on warm/dry nights. Keep nasty tropical bugs away.
- Solid in rain (I camp in Washington's rain forests, and stay dry.)
- Two doors, two vestibules. This is important when camping with a lady.
- Lifetime Warranty
