Ear Infection

Postby Landire » July 24th, 2009

So...I have an ear infection. I haven't been to a doctor yet but I've had them so many times in my life I know what they feel like. I've been reading about ear infections and flying. The idea of temporary hearing loss or a possible burst eardrum really doesn't appeal to me. I'm supposed to be going to Bristol on Tuesday (today is Friday). It's only an hour long flight but I'm worried. I always have pain from the air pressure when flying. Popping my ears is very difficult. So my question is, should I risk it? I'm planning on seeing a doctor tomorrow. But if I'm not going I need to cancel my hotel and try to convince Ryanair they'll let me reschedule even though I'm already checked in. Thanks for the help!

Try pouring some hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) in your ear canals, one at a time. You'll have to hold your head sideways so it doesn't run out. Let it sit in your ear and bubble for a few minutes. If you do this twice a day for a few days the infection should resolve itself. If not, taking a standard decongestant should get you through the flight with no issues.

# Pseudoephedrine (the active ingredient in over-the-counter medications such as Sudafed) 30 mg tablets, one every six hours for 2-3 days, may ease ear pressure. (People with a history of high blood pressure should avoid this product.)

# For infections of the ear canal (otitis externa): neomycin (Ak-Spore HC, Cortisporin, Neotricin HC, Ocutricin-HC), polymyxin B, and hydrocortisone (Cortisporin, Otocort, Poly Otic), two drops in the ear canal four times per day for five days, may also be used.

Don't ask us:

Ask your doctor.

They may have more effective sinus clearing drugs available by prescription, or, miracle of miracles, they may have samples. If you're always stuffed up, an inhaled steroid like Nasonex helps me a lot, because a lot of it is allergy and inflammation based.

If he says it's dangerous, listen to him.

If he says the stuffing can be handled by drugs, he's probably right.

I use this divers mix for ear problems. 33% alcohol - 33% white vinegar - 33% water. Let it sit in ear about 20 seconds and drain but don't rinse. I use it 2 or 3 times a day if needed.

Gets rid of swimmer ear and if I feel an earache coming on I use it and works good to keep things clear.
