Favorite treats when you return

Postby CarolinaCouple » May 21st, 2008

OK, when you're out on the road you get to try all kinds of cool things, but after being gone for a while you start to miss certain things that you only get at home.

I'm heading home soon after being gone for a few months. My wife being ever supportive has asked for a list of stuff that I'd like. All I can think of is to grill my own best damn 1/2lb. by-God real beef cheeseburger that man has ever put together. Eating

What do you crave?

Probably the 2 most common things would be...
Real fresh cold milk
American breakfast sausage

If I've been in one of the MANY places in the world that don't do spicy food, then that's what I want most. Thai or Mexican.

A good homemade tuna sandwich is tough to find abroad too...

Although fast food chains are all over, a good "bar" burger is always high on my list.
Originally from Southern California, Mexican food is up there too.

Cereal, I live off it, can't believe I went that long without. My first night back in the US I was in Baltimore and we went to a really good crab cake place. I couldn't stop eating them or anything else on the table.

The weird thing is that I don't tend to eat these much when I am at home, but when I am away, I really miss Cheetos.

A good taquito is always one of the first things that I have when I return home. Slathered in guacamole and cheese -- makes being home just a bit better. Ooh, and tamales. I tend to seek out the Tamale Lady within a day or two of returning from a long trip. Green corn -- those red beef tamales just aren't as good.

When I am away, the things that I miss most are dairy products (that don't include the letters "UHT") but I also miss taco trucks.

What kind of place doesn't have taco trucks? An uncivilized place, that's what.

I guess Canada falls into this category...our closest analog? Poutine trucks.

And, I have to admit. There are times when I mourn that I cannot drink an ice cold carton of milk(the liquid spilling down the sides of my squash) while on the road.

Joe Louis' I should set it up so someone would send me a care package of those "foreign baked goods" as I travel from place to place

Being in Asia for so long, I was craving bread, especially really dark German rye bread that I grew up with. When I got home, the bakery that made the best had gone out of business. I was traumatized, I had been thinking about that bread for weeks!
Also, cereal was big one. Cheese, and really good Mexican food. And I have to say pizza too. Even though you can get it everywhere, it's never quite the same as home and didn't 100% satisfy the cravings.

That's funny, I just emailed my girl that I'm dying for a good pizza, but we'll have to go back to the US for that one I think. Thank you so much for reminding me of bread! As simple as it sounds, there's something about bread that only the Germans can do--a fresh loaf of something besides white bread, with some honey that's made at the abby not far from my house. Oh I can't wait! Thank you for reminding me! Woot2

I hadn't had decent Mexican for ages when I spent my first night in the USA in over eight years. To my delight, I found a great place in Guam of all places (that meal proved that it is indeed American territory). The only drawback was it made the faux Mexican in Hiroshima all the more difficult to accept for the last year I was there.

Really good autentico Mexican food such as that served by La Parrilla or Dos Arbolitos in Los Angeles (unless I'm returning from Mexico, in which case I'd go for some good Italian food).

Ice cold milk! The first thing I do everytime I return to JFK airport is chug a couple milks. I have even written in my travel journals how much I miss milk.

I miss peanut butter too.

It isn't food I crave.

I can't wait to get off that plane and take a bath.

There's this burrito joint by my house that serves a Super Burrito that I grew up on. It was one of the first things I requested to eat when I got home. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
