Travel Ins. Question for US Citizens

Postby bakpakaddict » November 23rd, 2009

I am doing a year long stint in Central/South America, and I was planning on using WorldNomads. I know that in the US, you must continuously have insurance otherwise you can be denied coverage if something happens because of pre-existing conditions.

Does travel insurance count? If I leave my job March 1 and pickup with WorldNomads March 1, then come back in the country the following year and pickup another policy immediately, am i good?

This is all very confusing... I finally got WorldNomads figured out then someone pointed the gap problem out to me...

I did what you are doing some years ago - just had travel insurance only for 6 months of travel - and didn't run into any problems, but not sure if things have changed recently.

Travel insurance doesn't apply to your home country. It only works outside.

I was wondering this too. My insurance ends Dec. 1, I'm leaving in a week, and need to figure this out. Until speaking with family yesterday, I thought I had this figured out as well (I also planned on going with World Nomads). However, this issue, combined with the 100K medical expenses limit now has me quite confused about what to do. I too would love some additional info if anyone can make a suggestion based on their experiences...
