True 8th Wonder of the World?

Postby Donovan » May 20th, 2004

It seems like every country has a place that is commonly refered to as the "Eight Wonder of the World." I was traveling in Instanbul and the brochure for the Blue Mosque said, "come see the 8th wonder of the world." After I spent some time in Turkey, I went to East Africa on safari and the brochure for the Ngorongoro crater says, "come see the 8th wonder of the world."

I have seen the same for the Taj Mahal, Montreal's Victoria Bridge and a few other spots.

How many 8th wonders of the world are there? Is there a true one?

I think anybody in general refers to any neat thing as a "wonder of the world" these days, especially if its something to sell or charge admission to. I myself have been referred to as an eighth wonder of the world after my seventh hour at an all-you-can-eat crab shack. Its basically a common marketing slogan now, nevermind the fact that a lot of pretty cool things use it.

The first written reference to the original "seven wonders of the world" seem to show up in Herodotus' History. The only wonder mentioned in it thats still extant is the Great Pyramid at Giza. Apparently a lot of folks in the later bits of the twentieth century thought that was just tragic, so people started making up all kinds of new "wonders of the world" lists, including the "forgotten wonders", "modern wonders", and "natural wonders". I found a list of these here: lists

Since all these other lists have had the forsight to include more than eight things, I think the argument could be made that while there cannot be a "true" eighth wonder of the world, the rest of these, at least in spirit, are collectively deserving of that title.

There's a funny commerical in Swiss TV theses days. It's a beer brand and they did a series where they cheer on Swiss inventions (with their beer of course). One is: the Matterhorn. And the speaker says, that the trick with the Matterhorn is, that with all other monuments, you can see that they are man made. Not so the Matterhorn - it was created by the Swiss in a fashion, that everybody thinks it's naturally like that.
Think about it, if you happen to stand in front of it. Wink

I don't think there is an official list (apart from the out-of-date ancient one). Here are some good lists though:

Modern Wonders of the World

I think the most relevant list of 'world wonders' is the list of World Heritage sites mantained by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee. It is updated on a annual basis and here is the most up-to-date copy:
