Hi all, I'm feeling very stuck at the moment I want to travel I have the money but just cannot summon up the excitement to go travelling again. I've done australia and NZ and now want to do s/e Asia. I love it once I'm of but the getting going seems to be holding me back at the moment and I don't know why. I had to abondon my last trip because my dad died suddenly that was 3 years ago and now I'm stuck in a complete rut, I'm also 37 so maybe feeling too old (though I know I'm not realy) please remind me how exciting travel is especially if you've done or are doing s/e Asia at the moment.
Thanks

Forget about S.E Asia.
If you have the travel bug, anywhere you go the first time can be exciting for their own reasons, and the places you want to go to correspond to your needs at the time.
For example, a while back Africa held little interest to me at all. Now it's beginning to, if only because its the only continent I've not seen much of in a quality way. Sorry, a week in Cairo doesnt' cut it for Africa.
You say you're stuck in a rut. Well, get out of it. If you're sure you'll like travelling once you get on with it, pack up, buy your ticket, and just GO. Worry about where later. Thats what a Lonely planet is for.
SE asia is a perfect place to travel if you have no set itinerary. It's relatively cheap, and there are few things to do there that are really reservation or season dependent. The rainy season just means more rain, not much else. Jungles are still jungles, towns are still towns.
You can hang out in Khao San road in thailand, make plans, and SE asia is your oyster!!!
Just be careful about visas. But, thats a matter of a little research, no more.
Do you want to leave your rut? Are you more afraid to leave your rut than excited to get out of it? If fear is the reason, buy your ticket, pack, and go. If you genuinely see no reason to see another country or culture, because what you've got satisfies you, well, thats a fish of a different kind, and maybe you're not yet ready to go.
I get in these ruts too. I'm a terrible person for moving around, but once I do it, I like it. I have a natural inertia sense that anchors me to wherever I am, and then, I get bored, and I move again, and again, as boredom conquers inertia. Has your boredom conquered inertia yet?
The other problem I have is deciding where and when. I deal with this in a rather arbitrary way. I decide what events I have to stay home for, then, once my calendar is cleared, I pick a date, then plan the place. Once the place is planned, a country or a city, I book the ticket. Then I worry about the trip, of course. I do research. The night before, I stay up out of anxiety, but by golly, I'm ready to travel the next day, no matter what time it is.
My inertia is broken. I'm travelling again!!!
I hope this helps.

Re: Remind me why we travel please
Tell you what. How about you send me your money, and I'll send you some pretty pictures of what you could have been doing. Deal?
I don't know why other people travel, but I just happen to enjoy it. I get excited thinking about places that simply just aren't here. The thought of the power of a jet accelerating under me excites me. The idea of sitting in a restaurant where I don't speak the language, and have no idea what they're serving excites me. (Though I do prefer if I can figure out what it is once it arrives
) Seeing cities that are built to a different standard, different idea of how they should be built, excites me. Busy markets and the noise and rhythm of a foreign society excite. Landscapes I've never seen before excite me. Thinking about waking up when I want to, doing whatever I want to do all day, and then going to bed when I'm tired again...that excites me too.
Traveling's not for everyone - if these things don't excite you, then maybe it's not for you. But it sounds like you're kind of stuck in a rut at home, too, so maybe your just kind of down on everything, and need the break from routine. Either way, are you sure you don't want to send me some money?

When due to unforseen circumstances you find yourself in a country you hadn't seriously considered visiting & finding it a great experience!! Which is what just happened to me with South Korea is the best reason I know to travel!
