Road Trip to Anchorage, Alaska
I'm moving to Anchorage in June/Julyish. As I have to get my car there (and it's $2500 to have it shipped) I'll be driving from Houston, Texas, to Anchorage. I was wondering if anyone else had driven to Alaska, and what tips they might have. Also for any Alaska natives, what time of year is good, road hazards, weather, temperature, or any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

I've driven down from Alaska in September and it was amazing.
The weather should be good in June or July, and you'll have plenty of daylight. Make sure you have a gas can or two, fill up at every gas station you see once you're pretty far between cities. Depending on your vehicle, you might want to bring a few spare parts. Are you planning on camping out along the way or staying at motels?
Have a wonderful trip!

It's been years since I made the trip. Last time in February. Amazing even during that frigid time frame.
You'll want to get a book titled "The Milepost". Assuming it's still published, it gives a very complete listing of every site, stop, business, service, etc. that an Alcan traveler might need. I'd suggest buying now so you can study prior to the trip. Helps you select what to see and where it is.
I keep thinking about writing a similar piece for the area around Taos, NM but I'm not a writer and time does fly.
Took my wife to Anchorage and Fairbanks 16 years ago. Made the trip in early May. At that time, piles of snow removed from the streets still dot the landscape. Being an old Alaskan, I pointed them out to Suzanne. Finally, she expclaimed, "what piles of snow?". Since the snow was removed from the streets after sanding, the residue was now essentially redish brown piles with a little white showing thru.
Enjoy your travels!

I'm REALLY looking forward to it. I drive an Explorer, so I'm hoping it'll see me through. I do have a full spare though.
As for where I'm staying, I do have some family/friends along the way, but most of it I was planning on either camping or hitting a motel for the night. Course, I've never camped before so June in the desert might not be such a great time to start.
Any suggestions?
