Rock Climbing and Surfing (beginner) Costa Rica/Panama

Postby Marisa » November 22nd, 2007

Hey all! Just wondering if anyone had any leads on rock climbing and learning to surf/beginner surfing in Costa Rica and Panama.

As for the rock climbing, I plan on bringing my harness and shoes, but don't want to carry the rope and gear down. Looking to hire a guide for sport/top rope and some possible lead climbing. Up to 5.11ish skill toprope. Are there any good areas to go to for this, and any recommended guiding companies?

I'm also looking for some beginner surf areas. Places to rent a board, easy surf to learn.

Thanks!

The only places I can think of for rock climbing in COsta Rica are Tropical Bungee ( they do all sorts of climbing and rappells) www.bungee.co.cr

There is a climbing gear store called Mundo Aventura that could probably help you more www.maventura.com

as for learning to surf...jhust about everywhere in costa rica has some area full of shore breaks that are perfect for learning.

Thanks for the leads! Boquete looks interesting -- I've never seen a formation like that before, so it may be fun to have a go at it there.

Hey Marisa,

There is a nice little town in Panama called Boquete with some great basaltic formations. You will find various sport routes from 5.9 to 5.12a. Boquete is approximately 1.5 hrs from the Panamanian and Costa Rican border (Paso Canoas). Its about 1,000 meters in altitude, so the climate is nice and cool. Give Marcos or Eduardo a call @ (507) 66788933.

Saludos,

Eduardo
