So, im wondering what everyone would prefer to do, have done or plan to do, the advantages and disadvantages, and the practicalisty of it.
Do you buy a RTW ticket? Or do you get one flight, then when you want to move on then you go to the airport and choose were you want to go next/or follow a rough plan.
I would not buy a RTW ticket, as you have to work to a time set, if you go freely with the choice of were you go next, you can spend how ever long you want in a certain country. Sounds like a good point? Also what if you for whatever reason missed one of your flight? You knackered!
Hope to get some interesting responses!

hey there,
well i am new to the whole traveling through countries thing but i am leaving for rtw in july and i came to the same conclusion. it doesn't work for me. i will be gone longer than a year and i am not stopping where i started. hell, i am not stopping at all. i am also trying to do as much land travel as possible. that is my take on it.

i decided to buy tickets as i go.
wanted to go overland most of the time and more than that, just like you, wanted the freedom to change plans, if i had to.

We are not planning to do RTW tix either. My impression is that they can save you some cash if you have a fairly set itinerary and are planning to jump from region to region via plane rides. Not so good for a slow, open-ended trip or lots of overland travel.

We bought a round the world ticket got 8 flights included covering 39,000 miles and we bought additional flights on the way. One thing you must remember when buying a rtw ticket make sure the alliance allow alteration of dates. Some alliances allow you to alter the dates but it costs £50 per person for each change. We went with Virgin Alliance and they don't charge for any date changes. The only thing they charge for is if you change the route. Make sure you read the restrictions. The flights we bought in addition to the rtw ticket were not cheap, the cheapest ones were in the USA and we did plenty of shopping around and internet purchases so don't think everything is going to be rock bottom prices in Asia there are not.
