South Africa is the rainbow nation, but the defining food is probably Cape Dutch, and you will find it all over the Cape, and Durban is the heartland of curry, but the must try is BUNNY CHOW!!!

hm, try a Monkey Gland Burger or steak, a bobotie - in the end as much as possible of the great cape malay food (which you can find in the Bokaap in Cape Town). and, of course, have a bunny chow in Durbs! Lekker food!

Thanks! I always love to try the food in new countries. My grandmother used to travel a lot, but she always brought some food from back home with her to eat in her own room. I I always thought that was the biggest cop out. The food is such a window into the culture of a country. It will be really interesting to taste South Africa!

And - for those who like me - has trouble with some of the vocabulary I found this list of translations

Thanks again for the feedback, I kinda hope more people will join in.

Biltong! each and every kind. Ostrich, kudu, springbok, wildebeest, impala, etc.

Goes well with a Castle Milk Stout or 6.

Ostrich...it's absolutely amazing. And if you are in Cape Town there is an awesome vegetarian restaurant called portobello that has a great buffet.

South African food is absolutely amazing!! In addition, to the food eat as much fresh fruit as possible, its so good, and you have to try Mrs. Ball's Chutney, Wellington's Sweet Chili Sauce, Ouma's Rusks, Ceres fruit juice and Rooibos Tea. Of course, boerwors, pap, biltong, samp and beans, bobotie, and any curries, soooo delicious! If you are on Long Street partying late on the weekends, you have to check out the street vendor across from the resteraunt Cape to Cuba and the Che Bar. They sell 10 rand boerwors rolls with your choice of sauces, fantastic!! Enjoy your culinary experience in South Africa, you will miss the food when you leave, trust me!

Reading all these south african foods is making me hungry and a little homesick!! Yes, SA has an amazing diversity of food... as mentioned try curry, Bunnychow, Bobotie, biltong, boerewors and pap, an ostrich filet, Ouma rusks with your morning coffee or tea, dry wors, there is also some great and very fresh seafood in the coastal towns... the list is endless and very yummy :)
