Safety in Sudan

Postby RRG » October 21st, 2009

Hello all

My girlfriend and I are planning a Cairo - Cape Town overland for early 2010. We aim to follow the traditional route through Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia and on into Southern Africa.

I understand that tourist safety in Sudan on the route linking Egypt with Ethiopia is generally good with the locals being surprisingly hospitable.

However, I've also head that now the president has been targeted by the UN to be tried for war crimes popular feeling towards US /European citizens has deteriorated.

Does anyone have an up to date feel for the situation out there?

Thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

Civilians throughout Darfur now face the threat of new attacks. Those most at risk are mainly in North Darfur, but government and Janjawid attacks are also reported in West and South Darfur. Travelers' diarrhea is the most common travel-related ailment. The cornerstone of prevention is food and water precautions. prophylaxis is recommended for all travelers. Risk is lowest in the northern part of the country and higher along the Nile south of Lake Nasser and in the central and southern part of the country. Malaria risk on the Red Sea coast is very limited.

Thats funny! I'm actually planning a similar journey for early next year also!!
I made a map for myself based on uk foreign department(or whatever its called) advises and this is what it looks like:

The red areas mark the "Advised against all travel" and Yellow are "Advised against all but essential travel". So as long as you stay away from darfur, the deep south and the marked borders you should be safe.(apart from diseases and such ofc, as mentioned above) I take the information on UK's official website as trustworthy. The green arrows are just good entry points! ;)

Thanks for these posts. I was looking to see if anyone felt the atmosphere in Sudan had changed towards tourists since the international court had issued a warrant for the Presidents arrest?? The FCO website isn't too helpful in this regards.

Thanks
