Hi all,
I'm a single female looking to veg for a few weeks at house I have access to located in Santo Domingo. Is this safe? What's there to do? Beaches close by? I've travelled central america and did pretty well, a month in guatemala and all. But i want this to be a relaxing trip and I don't want to be scared or worried about things while exploring the city and other parts...or about malaria..
thoughts?

Hello!
A house that you have access to in Santo Domingo? Sounds great! Can I come with?
jk
There are plenty of beaches nearby.
Safety? It depends. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing is common - especially on the beaches. Clearly, you should keep your valuables at home, and only bring your sarong and flip flops to the beach. How did you come across this house that you can stay at? If you know them well and trust them, sounds kosher. Otherwise, you may want to be a bit suspicious. Stay smart, don't walk alone at night, drink too much, etc. and you should be fine.
Malaria is not a worry. You will be fine in terms of health. Perhaps just get a checkup and see that you are up to date on Tetanus, Hep A & B, and other vaccinations.
Do you know Spanish? Not knowing a word could place you in more dangerous situations than having a handle on the language.
Hope your trip goes well!

Our family went to the DR for Christmas 2011. We were mostly in Las Galeras visiting a friend, but we spent a day in Santo Domingo, particularly the Colonial Zone. It was nice. It seemed safe to me.
