I've been reading a lot of guides about travelling around SE Asia and quite often they suggest hiring a scooter for a day to see the local sites, this sounds like great fun but I'm worried about how this works with insurance.
Do you get specific insurance for riding the scooter?
Should it be covered by my travel insurance?

Read your policy. Most have exclusion clauses for participating in "dangerous activities," which oiften cover all manner of things that people commonly participate in from mountain biking to bungee jumping. Whether scooter rental is covered depends on the policy.
In any event, travel insurance doesn't cover liability, just your medical costs. If that's required in the country you're visiting, the rental agency ought to offer the necessary insurance.
