Hi Nick, just wondering if you have any advice for me.
I'm teaching in Malang from the 20th of June to August 1st. I'm getting a 60 day visa. I wanted to travel before and after, beginning sometime around June 10th, and coming back at the end of August. Is it easy enough to renew my visa, or no?
Also, if I fly into Kuala Lumpur and see a bit of Malaysia, is there any way to get from Singapore to Sumatra by boat? I was thinking of making my way from Pekanbaru down to Bandar Lampung, where I think I can take a ferry to Jakarta and then make my way across Java.
I guess my main question is, would it be better to just fly to Jakarta and begin from there, or is it fairly easy to get there from Singapore?
Thanks.

Nick

Lia,

I think you'll have a great time teaching in Malang, its a nice part of Java.

It sounds like you will be on a 60 day Tourist Visa, which is non-extendable. Here are the details for a Tourist Visa.

1. Nationals of countries not included in the list of the 11 countries that are eligible for Visa-Free visits must have a visa to enter Indonesia and should submit their application accordingly.

2. National of thirty six countries including Great Britain and Ireland, can either get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) upon arrival in Indonesia, which length of stay may not exceed 30 (thirty) days and cannot be extended / transfer, or apply at the Indonesian Embassy to stay longer than thirty days.

3. Visa issued at the Embassy has a maximum length of stay is 60 (sixty) days, and cannot be extended / transfer.

4. Tourist visa application from certain nationals would need to be referred to the Immigration Office in Indonesia (see various visas issued on Approval). This process can take up to two months before a decision is made and the visa is granted.

5. Type of entry : Single Entry only.

6. To return the passport by post, a Stamp Self Address Special Delivery Envelope should be provided. Ireland address may send an additional GBP 6,- to cover the cost of registered post.

7. Visa is issued within five to six working days from receipt of application.

You will have to leave the country for a day and come back on a VOA (Visa On Arrival) for 30 days.

Here's some advice on getting from Singapore to Sumatra by boat.

I have travelled between Singapore and Jakarta by plane, which is very short and easy. As the article mentioned, if you have the time and don't mind waiting around in ferry terminals, then taking the boat, you can always get one of the many ferries from Singapore to Batam. From there you can fly to anywhere in Indonesia almost. Or you could continue via ferry to Pekanbaru.

Don't stress it, you have plenty of options.
