One of the nice things about having your own, private room is that you can OPEN THE BLOODY WINDOW. I am convinced that inhabitants from the UK are not aware that their windows open at all.

It's one thing to be be sharing a dorm room with a bunch of stinky snorer/farters who have been out drinking rich beer all night, but then to not have any fresh air coming in...

One time we were surrounded by early rising packrats, all scurrying and crinkling their packs at the same time. We were so tired of the furtive nature of their packing, we got up and turned the light on.

Give me a snorer any time over a farter. At one hostel the GAS problem was so bad it sounded like she was playing Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 (Rondo).

*Raises hand* Guilty! Lifelong sinus problems=lifelong God-awful snorer. Believe me when I say that none of us do it on purpose. Whenever I stay in a hostel, I carry a couple extra pairs of earplugs, wear nose strips, and do my best to stay on my right side, but beyond that, there's not a whole lot I can do about it. Sorry guys!

For what it's worth, other people snoring doesn't bother me. I actually find it kind of soothing. :D It's the late-night and early-morning rummagers-in-bags that get on my nerves.

I know this is an old post, but I didn't want to start a new thread since my question has been (at least partially) discussed.

I am one of the snorers most of you hate so much. Trust me, I hate it about myself too! Mine is caused mostly by a benign tumor where my sinuses meet my throat. It was something I was hoping to have removed by now, but you know how doctors are!

Anyway - I am traveling to Washington DC in just over a week. i will be staying 8 days. I haven't stayed in a hostel in 10 years and back then I wasn't a snorer. I remember there being snorers in my room but I was forgiving as I knew it was part of the experience and I brought ear plugs.

I've been reading horror stories that other snorers have experienced and I am quite nearly scared out of going on this trip at all because of it. I've bought what my doctor has recommended I try but I don't know just how much it is going to work, because obviously if it cuts off my line of breathing all together, it's not something I can use.

My idea was this: I thought I would type out a letter and attach a good pair of earplugs to it and lay one on each bed. The letter would just say something like "I am sorry for any inconvenience I may cause while we room together. I have a benign tumor which blocks part of my airway while I am sleeping causing me to snore. Please accept these ear plugs as a peace offering and know that I am truly sorry"

The trip I am taking is literally a once-in-a-lifetime deal for me. It's ticking off a bucket list item. If it was just another vacation I would have waited until I had the surgery, or had the money to afford a proper hotel. I'm worried my snoring will just ruin the whole trip. Is there any advice you (especially girls, since I will be in a female dorm) can give to make friends not enemies?

I may be a snorer, but I can proudly say I am not a rummager, or a loud drunk, or a stumble-in-at-3am girl!

Aside from the fact that it's poor forum etiquette to dredge up 5+ yr old threads you're being selfish in staying in a hostel as you know you are a bad snorer. :(

Do everyone a favor & book a private room! 8-)

The most recent post in this thread is not 5 years old.

and would you like to pay for my private room? Even if I could have afforded the private room none were available during my dates of stay. Are you telling me that because of my tumor, I am supposed to sit at home and miss out on life? and when I have the opportunity to tick something off my bucket list, I am supposed to turn it down just because I might bother somebody in a hostel?

I'm sorry but if you're staying in a 10-bed room, then dealing with noise of any kind be it snoring, sleep talking, a rumager or a person who stumbles in drunk at 3am is EXPECTED, and that is why rooms like that go for so cheap, because what you don't pay in money you gamble paying for with quality of sleep.

Thank you for making me feel worse than I already feel. What gives YOU the right to segregate me? if YOU dont like noise, then YOU get a private room.

Have you considered something like Couchsurfing? That way you'd be less likely to disturb other people and you'd also save money. Another option might be Airbnb - with that you'd have to pay but it would be less than the cost of a hotel room. Anyway, just a few options to consider.

Other than that, I can't really give any advice. I'm a light sleeper and avoid dorms at all costs.

I am occassionally a snorer too although it's really just that I am a deep breather, but If I was a real problem for people I guess I would go sleep on a park bench or find a good trash can if I couldn't afford a semi private hostel room. The idea of "common courtesy " is long gone, I know. People now think they don't have to open the door for you , but they can go out any damn door they wnat so if the left door, in a two door situation is closer to their destination, they will sun you over rather than take the correct door, or if it is cold outside, they will open the doors of a big public building and leave them open while they stand their enjoying the frsh air and draining the bhilding of it's warmth and raising the heating bills tremendously. And if you say somethiing you are a cretin. In the alternative, if you are staying in cheap digs, you should expect to pay the price and learn to put up with the midnor disruptions, take a pill, or something. It does not much good to complain.

I disagree that dorm beds are cheap because you're having lower quality sleep. They are cheap because the cost of the room real estate is being divided by the number of beds available, and limited services (ie. room service). This is good for the business as they can earn more with less space, and common facilities.

The courteous traveller should do what they can to reduce the disturbance to other travellers, sometimes not entirely possible. If you know that without a doubt you are going to cause fellow travellers to suffer, then in my opinion you should do the courteous thing.

If you must stay in a hostel due to budget, then I would ask the hostel if they have a dorm that is less occupied or vacant that you could stay in. Sometimes the hostels have private rooms, which are a little more costly than a dorm bed, but not nearly as expensive as a hotel.

If you go with the letter and ear plugs route, keep in mind that if you are staying for a few days, that other travellers may come and go, so have enough for any new comers while you're there.

I wouldn't cancel your once in a lifetime trip because you snore. Just look at all the options and choose the best one that works for your budget, and is courteous to others.

Have a good trip.
