I am a huge loser (in many ways but I'll stick to the subject!
After all my talk about definitely quitting work in Feb, I've been 'conned' into staying a bit longer. Had the interviews for a replacement today and didn't really find a suitable person so the boss asked my to stay on. Not permanent mind you but probably for another couple of months.
On the positive side, I got an AUD$8,000 a year pay increase!! Sweet!! But have I sold out? I know I will definitely leave before mid next year, and I know the extra $$$ will help on my travels.
I hate being so nice!

I hate to say it, but what you've described is the textbook definition of selling out. Although if it's just for a few months, it's not so bad. Hell, I've been selling out for the past year and a half.

Just be sure to use that extra money on something good!

You can also look at it as another opportunity to save up more $$. I sold out hardcore the last 4 years, but in retrospect I'm glad I did.

As long as you can leave by mid next year, it should be fine. Extra bucks are always welcome. But then, history should not be repeated. I mean, come next year and they cannot find a replacement, what then? Good luck, stay firm and happy travelling in 2005.

At least I know I'm in good company of other sellouts!

And I intend on reminding the bosses constantly to keep looking for a replacement.

I think if you, yourself, in your head have accepted that you'd rather do the same thing for more money than all the things that you've always wanted to do then yes, you've sold out. If you're just sticking around to earn more money to do more of the things that you've always wanted to do then I say all power to you, girl Wink

Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on....

I kept pushing off when I wanted to leave my job because it never seemed like the right time for the company and I wanted to make my exit as smooth as possible. Like you, I kept getting sucked back in because they had deluded me into thinking the company couldn't run without me.

You should make it clear to your boss that you still plan to travel and that the situation is only temporary until they find a suitable replacement. Also, set a firm departure date in advance so you are all on the same page. This worked for me and when it was time to leave my boss even bought me a nice road atlas to assist me in my travels. Good luck!

Big, nasty corporate USA doesn't give a damn about loyalty.... They'd part ways with you in a second if they thought it convenient. Get out of there pal! It's just not a two-way street these days.

Yeah, I hear you ShellBelle. I just got a raise and now I'm staying for an extra 6 months.

I look at this as a chance to save for travel, do some researching, get excited some more, and reap the benefits that my stable life has to offer. Yes, there are benefits -- financial security, a routine to stabilize my erratic mind, San Diego surf, friends. I'm just going to throw myself into enjoying these things even more while I still can.

Then it's off to Asia, my friends!!!

well, look at it this way. at least now if you want a similar job when you get back, you have the leverage and guilt factor to make sure your boss does everything s/he can do to make sure you get one.
make sure you cash in on that...

decision is yours,, like tyler said those companies do what is bet for them, not you. they couldnt find anyone so are keeping you but if you are ok with it, and not desperate to go it shoudl be ok, if you are happy to stay. a year extra is quite a bit longer though. good luck whatever you choose!! that's what i'm worried about--doing the same thing!

BUT i know my co could care less about me (that's why i've been a temp for a year and a half) and i will have bought my plane ticket, made my plans, etc. by the point i tell them!

ha!

btw how much notice did you give? i was thinking a month so they could find my replacement (and i could help interview them....)
