Hi guys ive got a BA (Hons) English Degree. Does anyone know if thats enough to secure some teaching work in areas of south east asia?
I know about TEFL and would do the two week course but its gonna cost money and i don't know if its worth doing or not.

Does anyone know what the working day is generally like? Any experiences would be awesome!
Also any ideas on the general wage in SEA? Is it enough to live on for a short ammount of time?

Thanks Guys

Lew

Technically, you need a CELTA/TESOL/TEFL (and a degree) to teach in Thailand. But you don't need one for the other popular destinations like China, Korea, Japan, Cambodia or Vietnam. SOme schools will ask for one, but it's not a legal requirement for work visas.

Jobs vary tremendously from school to school. In Cambodia, you can say how many hours you want to work as there are no year long contracts to sign. I worked 4 hours a day, 5 days a week and lived very comfortably as well as saved. Thailand is different. Pay is horrible as it's a preferred destination. Employer don't need to offer much as there are so many people wanting to work there.

Generally, in Asia, you will teach kids. It's often more of a babysitting service than anything else. It's is tiring work. Cambodia had a 18-24 sort of age group. I could go on and on listing a bunch of possible scenarios, but SE Asia is a big place and each country is different.

Thanks very much for the advice. Will probably be more likely to teach in Indonesia/Cambodia/Vietnam/Laos than in Thailand tbh.

Did you get the work in the country or before you arrived?

Thanks again

In Asia, i've only worked in Cambodia, China (twice) and Japan. China and Japan were prearranged, Cambodia was a show up and knock on doors kind of thing. Keep in mind, when i was in Cambodia i had a degree, a teaching cert and 6 years experience (at that point)
