Thailand - advice

Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

Thailand - advice

Postby Geesh » October 29th, 2008

Hi All,

Sorry if this type of thing has been posted before. I did search the forum but could not find anything.

Basically, my wife and I are going to Thailand for 2 weeks on 7th Nov.

what I am after is some advice on budget, where to get a decent priced tailored suit (in Phuket only as we'll only be in Bangkok for 3 days before going to Phuket for the rest of out stay)

We've already sorted accommodation (this is our 'second' honeymoon as we've recently renewed our vows!!) so we're splashing out abit. Staying at the Sheraton in Bangkok and the Aquamarine Resort on Phuket.

If anyone can give some good advice on where to go for food, shopping, sight seeing would be great. Got a good idea on where we want to go but good advice is always helpful!

Cheers

Hi Geesh,

Phuket town is a short shuttle/taxi ride from where you are staying. There are a ton of options for food, shopping, sight seeing. Over the hill towards Karan and Kata Beach there are good beaches and shopping as well as food options. The go carts at the top of the hill are a good time as well if you feel the need for speed without the safety precautions of the western world.

If you can hire a shuttle or driver from the resort you are staying in to get to town or the beach side that will be good. It is expensive to get taxis in Phuket because there is not the same metered system that there is in BKK. The local bus is around ten Bhat but may have gone up a little since I was last there. You can get from Phuket town to the beach on that.

As for the tailor, I had mine made in BKK. I suggest talking with a few of them in Phuket before making any decisions. Remember Phuket is a tourist city, period. They are expecting when people go there from the west that they are ready to spend money. If you have time in BKK I suggest that you get fitted on the first day you are there and then pick up your stuff when you come back from Phuket. Most tailors can bust out a few suits in two days time. Also learn about the fabrics you want before going to Thailand. You can get Cashmere suits or wool or polyester or a combination of all of them. If you don't know what they feel like before hand then you might not get what you think you are buying.

Good luck and safe travels.
