I love the fact that people here are from every different part of the world.
So for a Englishman living in New Zealand, what the best band that I have never heard of?

Ever heard of Chris Spheeris? If you're open to some "new age/world" music check him out!
Here is a good one called Elecktra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CmiIM7yAmY
And then the same one, but with a Greek singer and lyrics (Be warned, the music video is somewhat strange lol!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXsfzPwcHr0
I recommend listening to a good variety of his music, because every album has a very different sound to it. For example, in contrast to Elecktra (from the album Culture), the album Brio has a more acoustic guitar sound to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlaPju5jvj8
Well, I hope you like it! He's a Greek-American composer living in Arizona.

Hi Zhinnn
Many thanks, I listened to them all. A little too "New Age" for me! But I always like to listen to new music.
Check out Samonella Dub!

Everyone Kiwi, has this music imprinted in their soul I think!

without knowing what kind of music you like it's hard to guess who you might not have heard of but here are some folks I've been listening to quite a lot lately:
Habib Koite
Bajofondo
Ba Cissoko
Black Lab (This Night is my current favorite)
Cidade Negro
Citizen Cope
Colin Hay
Ingrid Michaelson

Awesome! Thanks so much, exactly what I am looking for. I especially did like Habib Koite,
Bajofondo and Black Lab (although a bit angsty for beautiful sunny NZ day).
I don't want to be stuck with particular genres of music, I think people will then try to tailor choice based on what they think I might like, rather than what they like as an individual.
Check out English punk/folk rockers "The Levellers"

This song in particular, reminds me of taking the train to airport just before I started my first trip, knowing I had no intention of ever coming back to the UK, with no idea where I was going to end up.

Have you listened to much New Zealand music?
They have some great stuff - I love Bic Runga. Wonderful lyrics.
Lately from the Netherlands I like Caro Emerald, from Scaninavia - Ida Maria
From England I like Kate Nash quite a bit.
For belly dancing - Natacha Atlas or Beats Antique
Spanish - DePedro, Calle 13, Gabriel y Rodriguez, Julieta Venegas
Africa - Mafikizolo
World - Manu Chao, Lhasa de Sela, Lila Downs, Xavier Rudd
If you like world music you should check out the videos on National Geographic's Music Website - they have a great variety of stuff on there.
