The Best Pacific Northwest Hostels

Postby Shea O'Neill » August 14th, 2008

Hey

I'm taking a travel expedition to the Pacific Northwest on Saturday for an indefinitive amount of time. I have a good amount of money saved, but the name of the game for me is always budget travel. Thus far I've been using some pretty great discussion posts and reviews from Viscape.com (http://www.viscape.com/forums/16/topics/40), but I'm really trying to reach out to a lot of travelers to get some suggestions for awesome/affordable hostels and the greatest pacific beaches. I'm specifically looking for hostels in Portland, Newport Beach, Port Townsend, Victoria, and Vancouver. If you could give me some suggestions I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

well hello mr oneill. while i do already live in portland i must say that the hostelling international northwest portland is a great place. Every year the guys at bootsnall hq host a party, and every year people bunk up at that hostel. id had the pleasure of crashing there with them. the people who run the place are great, especially britta. its in a wonderful neighborhood, public transportation, and many forms of entertainment are nearby. not to mention that there are several bna-ers in the neighborhood.

Great Rec

I couldn't actually get in there (crazy bush I supposed) but I have been staying at the Hawthorne hostel which I have to reccomend as being quite wonderful. It is right next to the 14 so its remarkably easy to get into town, the rates are great, the food (they do brunch occasionally is great) and the people (which is to be expected) are great.

Hi Shea,

What a beautiful location you're choosing to adventure in!

While I'm not very familiar with options in Oregon and Washington, I did spend two summers working in Glacier National Park. And please heed my advice, no trip to the Pacific Northwest is complete without visiting Glacier National Park in Montana.

Although a little out of your way, you won't regret your time there.

Please feel free to check out my page on the Polebridge Mercantile . It has the park's only hostel.

For more information on the park, check out my Glacier National Park Travel Guide.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

Enjoy your time in the Pacific Northwest!

I was in Port Townsend in March this year and stayed at the Palace Hotel. Wandere din on the off chance since it was central and since it was off season it was pretty quiet. I wasn't going to stay as it was more than I wanted to pay on a backpacker budget, so they halved the price of the room! Worth a shout if you're in the area, the place has plenty of character, it used to be a brothel many moons ago!

The website is http://www.palacehotelpt.com/

Enjoy the Pacific Northwest, the Oregon Dunes are awesome.
