The most exotic place you've traveled to with kids
lilpigs2001
As I was planning my next family vacation, I got a lot of negative comments from family and friends saying that the places I choose are either too dangerous, too dirty, too polluted, too hot, too cold etc. So out of curiosity, what is the most exotic/off the beaten path places you've traveled to with kids and how did it go?

We've had great experiences traveling with our son. We haven't been anywhere that I would consider dangerous, although I've gotten some raised eyebrows and lots of comments on how "adventurous" we are. Usually it's meant as a compliment, but not always.
We've taken our son, now 14 years old, to:
the Americas: US; Canada; Mexico; Belize; Dominican Republic; Peru
Asia: Japan (including Okinawa); China (Hong Kong and Macao)
Europe: Netherlands; Belgium; Germany
We are planning to visit friends in Ghana next year.

We live a life of travel ( last 7 years to 44 countries on 5 continents on $23/day pp with a young school age child) and I'd say most of our travel is off the beaten path, but of course we hit hot spots too like SF, Paris, London, Sydney, Stockholm, Bora Bora , Bangkok, NYC etc.
Probably the most exotic places have been the deep in the Sahara with a non-vaccinated 6 year old ( all of Morocco is exotic, but wonderful).
or climbing the Tigers Nest in Bhutan at 10 ( done by VERY few American kids ..if any..and all of Bhutan is exotic and wonderful ).
Capaddocia, Turkey ( yep all of Turkey is pretty exotic and wonderful).
Petra, Jodan ( yet another exotic and wonderful country).
We don't usually get any negative comments from family or friends and we wouldn't listen if we did.
All of our travel has been amazing!

We've been to many places with our kids in Central and South America, Asia and Africa, but I'd have to say Cuba. Our recent trip there was absolutely fascinating. It's like traveling back in time, just incredible. And because you can stay in casas particulares (basically B&B's in people's homes), you can get a really authentic, open experience. People are very friendly and it felt like the safest place we've ever been.

I've only taken my son to the Bronx, the wilds of Pennsylvania, and just over the border to Nogales, Sonora.
Daddy needs to earn more before we go much farther afield.

Hi there,
We have been to over 20 countries last year travelling with our 3 year old son. We visited Europe, the Middle East , South east Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, HK, Macau then Latin America (Chile, Argentina and Brazil). To many back at home many of these are exotic places and at times may feel not as developed. Throughout the 14 month travel period, we have never had any issues with security, safety and/or health. What's ironic is our son who has episodes of eczema (skin condition) developed a flare in Australia, one of the cleanest and most developed nations in the world and no issues while in places in south easy Asia considered not as clean or developed.
One thing to remember, arm yourself in good old common sense while travelling...for instance, buy health insurance, don't flash your worldly possessions in poorer areas, respect local customs and stay away from places that are known danger zones. Read your government's travel advisory reports (usually prepared by the Foreign Affairs office) for latest developments in the countries you are trying to visit. (For instance, we had to re-book our flights to Bangkok last year due to the floods).
Also, get to know the community of other travelling families. Here is a list we put together: http://aroundtheworldwithkid.com/resources/family_travel_blog_directory/
be your own judge, don't let your friends spoil your adventure. It will be a life-changing experience. Cheers
Safe travels
