The New 7 wonders of the world

Postby dopeyzn » October 18th, 2006

Well it seems "they" have decided we need a new 7 wonders and it's been left to "us", the general public to vote! Surprisingly the results will be out on 07.07.07! What would you vote for?

Have your vote

I vote for David Hasselhoff. It's a wonder he hasn't outlived his 15 minutes of fame yet.

Well, of the 21 finalists, I have seen 11 of them (not bad for being only 26 eh?): the Acropolis, the Eiffel Tower, Petra, the Pyramids, Sancta Sophia, the Statue of Liberty, Chichen Itza, the Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu and the Colosseum. Before the voting runs out I'll probably have seen Timbuktu and possibly the Alhambra and St. Basil's.

Of the 11 I've seen, here's what I'd do:

Definitely In
- The Pyramids (has to be included, given that it's all that's left of the original seven wonders)
- Sancta Sophia (really, just a remarkable building)
- Petra (an incredible place)
- The Colosseum (the enduring symbol of the Roman Empire, still standing 2000 years later)
- Machu Picchu (just fabulous, lives up to the hype)

Definitely Out
- Sydney Opera House (in my home city, but I've never really understood why it's so famous)
- Eiffel Tower (really, there's nothing at all about this structure that makes it a wonder)
- The Statue of Liberty (see Eiffel Tower)
- The Pyramid of Chichen Itza (the Uxmal pyramid, which is more or less up the road, is more impressive, I'd say)

Unsure
- The Taj (it is beautiful, but so are loads of other Mughal buildings in India/Pakistan that no one's ever heard of)
- The Acropolis (another great place, but not sure if there's room for it)

Remaining
Of the places I haven't been, I'd guess that my final two spots would be filled by two out of these three: The Great Wall of China, the Angkor temples and the Easter Island statues).

That was actually very difficult.

I cut out the newest ones (I adore the Sydney Opera House - it's beautiful, but hardly a wonder), but the Statue of Liberty or even Christo Redentor or mad King Ludwigs castle? Come on...

Difficult to choose only 7 among the remaining, though. I think I'll narrow it down to the ones that are also mysterious, thus ruling out Hagia Sofia, Taj Mahal, the Kremlin and the Alhambra - all unbelievably gorgeous buildings. Also, the Colosseum and Acropolis are amazingly interesting - but well documented, thus less mysterious.

I've seen 14 of these and try not to be partial to those. So I'm ending up with:

1 The pyramids at Giza (an absolute given)
2 Petra
3 Great Wall of China
4 Stonehenge
5 Macchu Picchu
6 Easter Island statues

7 a tie between Angkor Wat, Timbuktu and Chichen Itza. I'm leaning towards Timbuktu.

Hm... I think I have some reading to do.

Agreed. How can this NOT be a wonder of the world....?

I haven't been to Easter Island but it seems to me that Angkor should be on that list, it's the largest religious complex on the world and I don't know, Easter Island seems like it would be dissapointing, compared to Angkor.
