Hi everyone,
I'm deeply moved by the story of this man who spent 11 years walking around the world. He started his journey in 2000 and he'll be home in a few weeks.

I've read that when he left he had only $4000 with him. He sleeps in a tent and knocks on doors for hospitality. I love walking and traveling and this kind of voyage would fit me like a glove... Is it possible to do it with so little money? I would guess that it is indeed possible, if your goal is walking for peace instead of spending like the usual tourist would do...
Ben.

Wow. Epic Journey this bloke has been on. I just spent some time on his site.
Yes - I believe it is possible to travel that cheaply. As you can see, he has to rely on the kindness of strangers at some point and has picked up a few sponsors. The folks I know that get this sort of success - stick with it a long time before hitting upon sponsors etc. Thanks for sharing

Yes it is. This man, Jean Beliveau, just got back last week to Montreal where he started his journey 11 years ago.
He had $4000 when he left and used 54 pairs of shoes. His children were aged 18 and 20 years old. He walked 75500 km (47000 mi) and has visited 64 countries.
For money, he relied 80% on donations and his wife has supported him with $5000 a year. He was welcomed to sleep in 1600 homes. He slept in churches, temples, under bridges, in fire department buildings, and 1500 times in his tent. He was robbed 2 times in South Africa and Ethiopia.
During his 11 years on the road, he never came back once to his home in the province of Quebec, not even for his father's passing — he was in Belgium at the time.
His wife joined his for a week every year and his children also joined him on the road. His goal was to walk 100 km (62 mi) a day.
Here's the French article where I this info came from: http://www.cyberpresse.ca/actualites/201110/15/01-4457565-marcher-pendant-11-ans.php?utm_categorieinterne=trafficdrivers&utm_contenuinterne=cyberpresse_vous_suggere_4457758_article_POS1
