Re. Che Guevara (how did we get here???), I am not at all informed except in the broadest brush terms:

- Revolutionary, socialist, revered by some Latinos as a leader and pan-nationalist and despised as a butcher/militant by others.

- Cute little icon on tshirts people who aren't Latinos like to wear as some sort of statement, fashion or otherwise.

- Most importantly, played by hottie Gael Garcia Bernal onscreen. How did he get so lucky? I want to be played by someone far more attractive than I am in the film version of my life when I'm dead.

I don't know more than that to comment except I am reserving any conclusions about it. I just don't know enough. I'm not Latina, so I just can't have that position on it. Our historic leaders have plenty of skeletons too, even revered ones.

Can we go back to bashing the Thorntree? It makes me happy.

I'm still coming up with the name and flag for a reconstituted Cambodia. I was thinking of giving it a club name like "The Razmataz."

I sort of like the Timorese flag, so we may have to conquer them first so as to procure the necessary trademark:

I tried to make fun of the expats you were complaining about, but unintentionally offended Static. I figure it's just safer to lead an insurrection in Cambodia.

Oh. I couldn't quite tell from your post before. Well I thank you for that. Big Grin It helps assuage my pent-up murderous rage yielded by TT reading.

I had a question successfully answered on Thorntree yesterday. By a middle-aged Expat no less. Razz

It's almost like winning the lottery!

^^ Expat or Sexpat?

Does this mean I have to update the scoring?

Well, I don't think he was hitting on me. Wink No need to update the scoring, there was also a uselessly lame reply by someone too lazy to read the question.

You know, for the record, it was that old fogey Static that brought age into the mix. (Curmudgeon that he is.)

I simply defined two classes of expats in Asia: easily-agitated greasy perverts and the somewhat-defensive good folk. I never said either classification was exclusive to an age group. In fact, I imagine a large % of the pervert category is made up of westerners in their 20's.

Static is no old fogey, he's much cooler than that. The food music cd and curmudgeonly quality are proof. That's why we like having him around.

We're all going to get old, but youthfulness never goes away unless we choose to let it go. If younger backpackers ever get exclusionary about what age group they THINK they can relate to, it's because they don't realize this fundamental fact of life. Yet.

Don't worry Coop, I wasn't even generalizing about expats in Asia. Just very specifically about the momos who burn my biscuits with their repeat ignorance about my birth country on the TT.

Only without the millions of dollars in your bank account. Razz

I hope there was some unknown cafe with organic chocolate crêpes and a free violin concerto in the middle of the most gorgeous mountainscape you've ever seen in it for you.

I've never cast aspersions on an age group. I have too many calcium deposits developing in my knuckles to start throwing stones at other aging farts. Wink

There are no lower life forms than trustafarians panhandling for drug money, because mommy and daddy cut off their allowance.

Well, the Haight Kids, as we like to call them, are trustafarians who just decide to be homeless because it would be fun, and sit around in their fancy North Face jackets and timberland shoes and harass me for money. Then, at the holidays, they mysteriously disappear.

Anyway, Thorn Tree scares me. I have thought about asking questions there before, but judging by a lot of answers I see, I'd just get snarked at. And for the most part, I don't need that.

Well, the world does need future congressmen.

Coop, I wasn't directing that at your post.

Just throwing the non-crazy non-momo travelers of middle-aged maleness on THIS forum some support.

Oh, don't worry about it. I'm not the sensitive type. Smile All this talk has, however, made me curious as to what all the hubbub is about over at the Thorn Tree.
